Annelies has been busy designing new slippers. The prototypes have been tested extensively by our twin testpanel in Uitdam, with the following results:
"Mannenslof grijs:
Bij Manou bleef de slof zitten, Jolijn trekt deze onmiddelijk uit. Redelijk om aan te trekken. Blijft wel wat ruim bij hiel. Zien er super uit. Misschien voor iets oudere kinderen. Ik zou dan wel testen of ze die dan makkelijk zelf kunnen aantrekken.
Schoentjes met lint:
Opening been/hiel is veel te wijd. Schoentje is zo uit. Ook trekken de kinderen het strikje los. Dubbele knoop niet mogelijk en ziet er ook niet zo leuk uit.
Conclusie afgekeurd.
Laarsje rood:
Topper! Warm, makkelijk aan te trekken aangezien je hals laars hebt voor houvast. Veter is lang genoeg voor dubbele knoop en ziet er dan nog steeds leuk uit. Wollen bovenstuk sluit goed aan.
Laarsje wit:
Minder goed dan de rode. Door vilten bovenkant is dit een stuk stijver. Strikje is dan ook moeilijker om aan te trekken om laars sluitend te krijgen. "

In the museum shop, anyway!
The Silvermuseum in Deurne (B) organises the exhibition Corals and Bells-A collection of rattles from October 6th 2009 to January 10th 2010. One of the most striking aspects of the Corals and Bells exhibition is
the sheer variety of jingling toys, both in terms of their shape and
decoration. The private collection comprises 167 rattles which cover
the period from the beginning of the eighteenth century through to
the middle of the last century. They were made in Belgium, England,
France, the Netherlands and Spain. The objects are shown alongside
captivating miniature portraits and portraits of children depicting
the tiny owner holding his or her rattle.
The rattles of Supernana have been chosen by the museum for the museum shop, as a good example of today's rattles. |

A faire soi-même

"Last Sunday I went to a huge children’s trade fair here in Amsterdam: the Kleine Fabriek (Little Factory). It was great — I saw tons of wonderful products, some of them familiar but a lot of them were new to me! I think I was there for over three hours, and I came home exhausted, but happy! In the coming months I will definitely let you know about a lot of the cool things I discovered…
Let’s start with these wonderful rattles from Supernana. Supernana is a Dutch company that was started a couple of years ago by the very kind Philine, mother of three young children, who had a high-fly job at Volvo before she decided to switch careers.
Supernana produces extremely simple, durable and beautiful baby and children’s goodies, often inspired by vintage products and patterns. In this world overflowing with cheap throw-away products, Supernana makes timeless products, that will be passed from child to child and eventually to the next generations. All the products are made from natural products of superb quality, where possible organic and all handmade in Europe with the utmost care.

The baby rattle pictured is even more basic (and absolutely beautiful in all its simpleness), and is available in 30 gorgeous colours.  | Press release: Clean & Unique signs at Fair Wear Foundation, Supernana to be chairman
Amsterdam, November 26th, 2008
The brand new association Clean & Unique has signed the Code of Labour Practices of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) last Monday. Clean & Unique and FWF have started a unique pilot project to give small fashion businesses the opportunity to become a collective member of FWF, thus sharing the cost. Since this is a new form of membership for FWF, the terms of the agreement will be evaluated in one year.
Clean & Unique consists of seven participants: Eco Couture, Studio Jux, Merunisha Moonilal, Monkee, De Katoenfabriek, Van Markoviec and Supernana. They are all small companies, active in several segments of the fashion industry; high fashion, recycled saris, organic screenprinted T-shirts, outdoor fashion and children’s accessories.
Clean & Unique is all about fair labour and the use of sustainable materials. Next to the members-only association, there is also a website where small fashion companies can take part in the community, discussions on the forum and be informed of informative meetings and lectures. Clean & Unique is also looking for new members to increase possibilities for sharing experiences and collective advantages.
With the signatures of FWF and the seven Clean & Unique members, a start has been made for a promising cooperation. The hope and expectation is that apart from FWF and Clean and Unique, the labourers in far-off production countries will benefit as well in the long run.

Washing and drying clothes makes up to 80% of the complete carbon dioxyde emissions of a piece of clothing duing its complete lifecycle. The good example of Marks and Spencers inspired us to add the text "Think climate, wash at 30℃" to our washing label. Most modern washing powders work just as well at 30 as at 40℃, and you can save 33% energy per washing. Just leave it to dry on the line and you're doing great! This advice is not valid for our felt products. You may only wash those by hand, very quickly and carefully, if it is really necessary. Never ever put it in the washing machine or dryer! |

Afgestudeerd bij het kleine Nederlandse automerk Donkervoort, daarna naar Zuid Duitsland gegaan om als studio-ingenieur te gaan werken op de styling afdeling van Audi, daarna naar Belgie verhuisd om te gaan werken bij Volvo Cars Gent. Daar werkte ik eerst als kwaliteitsingenieur voor leveranciers (veel fabrieken bezoeken) en daarna als gebiedscoach (soort ploegbaas over ongeveer 70 mannen en vrouwen aan de assemblagelijn).

"Toch is ecologische mode nog vaak het domein van een handjevol mensen dat er uit ideologische motieven mee aan de slag gaat. Zoals Philine van der Vegte van Supernana. Via internet en winkels verkoopt zij haar schattige, maar vooral verantwoorde baby- en kinderaccessoires.
De handgemaakte (in Nederland en België, dus niet in lage lonenlanden) babymutsjes, slaapzakjes, slofjes, spuugdoekjes, dekentjes, speeltjes en boxkleden worden zoveel mogelijk vervaardigd van ecologische materialen. "Toen ik kinderen kreeg, had ik meteen al een hekel aan die hele wegwerpcultuur rondom speelgoed en kinderkleding", zegt Van der Vegte.
"Al die plastic spullen. Daarmee worden zoveel energie en grondstoffen verspild. Daar wilde ik beslist niet aan mee doen. Dus alles wat wij maken is zo duurzaam mogelijk."
Nog niet alles van Supernana is dus biologisch. "Dat komt omdat we nog een erg klein bedrijfje zijn en nog geen eigen stoffen kunnen laten maken. Dan zit je dus vast aan wat er te krijgen is en dat zit nog vaak in die typische 'ecosfeer'. Dus weinig fleurige lapjes, maar veel bruin en ecru."
Hoewel Van der Vegte nog niet kan leven van Supernana, ontdekken steeds meer mensen haar spullen. "Je merkt toch dat mensen op zoek zij naar iets bijzonders voor hun kinderen. Iets wat handgemaakt is en duurzaam. Dat is toch een trend." |

Interview Philine "Zij heeft flair" door Lenneke Arts
"Na gewerkt te hebben in de autoindustrie, ben ik mijn eigen bedrijf Supernana begonnen. In de auto-industrie kon ik mijn droom niet verwezenlijken. Ik wilde graag een 'vrouwenauto' ontwerpen, maar dat kostte bakken met geld. Toen dacht ik: ik moet nu iets anders gan doen. Auto's verkopen kan altijd nog.
Ik maak sinds 2006 kraamspulletjes van natuurlijke en biologische materialen, zoals vilt en wol. Dan gaan spullen veel langer me. Je koopt een paar slofjes, je kinderen stappen erin rond en daarna maak je je nichtje er nog blij mee. Dat is toch mooi? Ik wil geen bedrijfje leiden dat allen maar draait om geld en ik wil de wereld verbeteren. Mijn kinderen vinden het normal dat hun speelgoed na een dag al kapot is, maar ik niet. Ik ben dagenlang druk aan het frunniken, samen met mijn collega. Dat ik eigen baas ben, vind ik soms eng. Als ik een foute beslising neem, zit ik daarna zelf met de ellende. Maar aan de andere kant: van en goede stap kan ik extra genieten.
Het liefst zou ik overal in Europa ateliers openen waar vrouwen samen nieuwe ontwerpen bedenken en leuke, nieuwe producten maken. Ze kunnen dan gedeeltelijk vanuit huis werken. Allemaal gelukkige vrouwen, die samen werken aan mooie spullen. Dat klinkt toch geweldig? En of dat ook kan? Ja, ik denk van wel. Supernana begint te groeien. Steeds meer winkels reageren enthousiast. En dat geeft me zo'n trots gevoel!" |

Michelle stuurde ons een goed idee! Wij zullen deze kisten zelf niet gaan maken, maar omdat het zo mooi in de Supernana filosofie past krijgt het hier toch een plekje:
"Een eenvoudige, maar mooie kist, aan de binnenzijde eventueel gevoerd met een mooi stofje. In de kist zitten cadeautjes voor het kindje dat geboren is. Dat kunnen cadeautjes van supernana zijn, maar misschien is het ook wel leuk als degene die de kist cadeau geeft, er nog iets persoonlijks aan toe kan voegen. Of er is een keuze in: jongens/meisjes-pakketten, duur of goedkoop, ook cadeautjes voor de ouders, etc. Deze kist wordt bijvoorbeeld door opa's en oma's gekocht wanneer er een kleinkind geboren is. De kist is dus eerst gevuld met cadeautjes, maar zal altijd een vaste plek op de kamer hebben. Misschien als verkleedkist, speelgoedkist, rommelkist of als kist met herinneringen, fotoboeken en plukjes haar. En daarna kan de kist weer doorgaan op de volgende generatie. Mijn uitgangspunt zou zijn: simpele kisten, effen geverfd (evt. kunnen mensen kleur kiezen). Misschien zelfs versiering, maar ik denk dat dat het duurzame karakter schaadt (omdat een tienermeisje niet zoveel meer heeft met bloemetjes en lieveheersbeestjes, om maar wat te noemen - bovendien zijn versieringen trendgevoelig, dus gaat ook geen generaties mee). Ik denk dat het een mooie traditie zou zijn: zo'n kist cadeau geven bij een geboorte en dan voor een volgende generatie weer met nieuwe cadeaus vullen." |

BREIEN "Als productiecoach bij een internationale autofabrikant stuurde ik mensen aan die in ploegendienst werkten. Als ze een minuut te laat waren, moest ik ze keihard anpakken. Ik begreep wel waarom dat was, maar die werkwijze stuitte me tegen de borst. ik vind het hebben van eign verantwoordelijkheden namelijk heel belagrijk- voor mezelf en voor anderen. Vorig jaar heb ik het roer helemaal omgegooid en ben ik kinderaccesoires gaan ontwerpen en maken. Alle producten zijn zelfgemaakt; ik werk met vrouwen die thuis naaien en breien. Er zitten veel vrouwen thuis achter de geraniums die graag zouden willen werken, maar dan liefst wel vanuit huis en flexibel. Ik merk zelf ook dat ik veel relaxter ben geworden door dit werk terwijl ik minstens zoveel uren draai als vroeger."
ZIN "Bedrijven kunnen het zich niet meer veroorloven om vastgeketende Chinese kindertjes voor een hongerloon goedkope kleding te laten maken, vind ik. Zoiets wil ik in ieder geval niet op mijn geweten hebben. en als je en mutsje koopt is het toch ook leuk om te zien wie het maakt en hoe het gemaakt is? Wij verkopn nu nog alleen via internet, maar we gaan ateliers opzetten waar klanten naar toe kunnen komen. Zo wil ik een open en eerlijke sfeer creeren. Het is nog wel moeilijk om echt leuke stoffen te vinden die natuurlijk en biologisch zijn gemaakt. Ik geloof niet dat het grote publiek alleen voor biologisch gaat; kleding moet gewoon ook leuk zijn. Het moet makkelijk zijn om de bewuste keuze te kunnen maken."
ZONDE "Ik heb auo's ontworpn en ik blijf dol op de nieuwste auto's. En hoe sneller hoe beter. Daarmee draag ik bij aan de vervuiling van de grond, en die is op veel plekken al zo vergiftigd dat ik er eigenlijk geen aardbei uit wil eten." |

De Supernana hip&handgemaakt zomermarkt was weer heel gezellig. Het was prachtig weer, we hoefden deze keer dus niet in de wind te staan. De Scheepskameel draaide op volle toeren maar bracht alle deelnemers toch een grote kop tomatensoep. Heerlijk, dank je wel Marije!

We've wanted to for a long time, but could not find the right fabrics. Now we have a sweet geen vichy-check and a good quality thick terry, both organic fair trade cotton. The green is not dyed, but a natural green cotton. Very nice! In this material, we'll make some Supernana basics (burp cloth, baby hat, sleeping bag, bath cape, pacifier cloth). Soon on the site and grandly presented on de Kleine Fabriek in July! |

What we used to do in secret before, is now out in the open. As of today, all of our cuddly cloths will be officially delivered with a good wish for the baby that gets it. When sewing the wooden ring by hand, it is almost impossible not to think of the baby. Because of that, we now add a very sweet and good wish. It makes us very happy, at least! |

The latest addition to our baby shoes is a bit thicker and therefore more robust as well. They're all elivered in a nice shoe box. These new shoes can be ordered with a cream sole (the baby does not walk yet!) or with a matching sole to the top. There's also some less baby-like colours: black, charcoal, hare. Beautiful! |

 | January 2007 kids fashion fair antwerpen
On January 14th and 15th, we had a stand on Kids Fashion Fair in Antwerp, a trade show for children's fashion. It was the first time we did this and we were quite nervous to show our Little Red Riding Hood collection between all the big established brands! This turned out to be absolutely unneccessary, we built a very beautiful (and tiny) stand, and got a lot of visitors and positive comments (especially the "ravissante" baby shoes did very well). There were a lot of journalists and we also got a lot of tips and adresses from other standholders. We have grown a bit again! |

We hadden ons al bijna rijk gerekend met een bestelling uit Benin van 1000 paar slofjes, 200 wollen mutsen en 200 babydekentjes. Toch een beetje gek, wat moeten ze daar met die spullen? Een snelle check op de site van de Nederlandse ambassade in Benin leerde ons dat dit een bekende oplichterstruc is om zogenaamde invoerrechten of een visum te verkrijgen. Webwinkels opgepast dus! En wij blijven de dekentjes nog even per stuk verkopen... |

In September and in March the angora goats that deliver us our supersoft mohair for baby blankets and baby hats are sheared. That will give them enough time to grow a new fur in time for winter. These pictures we took from the site of Les bergers Cathares, who are in the same cooperation as our goat farmer Katja. after shearing by the tondeur, the trieur will carefully select the wool for quality. After that, the wool is washen, spun and dyed together. |

Bezoekers hadden veel werk gemaakt van hun outfit, er waren prachtige creaties te bewonderen.Wij blikken terug met veel plezier op een zeer geslaagde dag. They're here, those lovely white on white box quilts! Elly Prins quilted them for us with a soft woollen filling. The fabric is a very fine percal (finely woven cotton) and the size 100cm x 100cm. This really is a very beautiful gift for a very special baby. This timeless blanket will last at least a lifetime. |

The oldfashioned buttons were particularly hard to find - in the back room of a small store they dug up some small boxes for us. We now have the buttons in different colours and shapes and try to adapt them as good as we can to the colour of the felt. |

Het was en prachtige dag in het lommerrijke Lozer op de dag van het jaarlijkse vlottenfeest. Het was zeer druk met veel mooie en originele vlotten. Dat sommige vlotten nogal diep in het water lagen gaf niet met dit mooie weer! Ook de Supernana inzending wist een zeer mooie tijd neer te zetten. It was about time to plan a felting lesson for a day to start practising making felt hats. Starter was a flat piece of fabric. Then for a hat, we start around a wooden plank and the a wooden hat mould that we have in all sizes. From wool to felt is a matter of lots of soap and hot water, and rubbing, rubbing, rubbing! The children loved it too and were able to produce some very pretty and colourful results. |

 | April 2006 To the goat farm
We paid a visit to our supplier for the mohair that we knit our baby blankets from. The young goats had just been born, so this month Katja's angora goats in St Pantaleon in the south of France are kept in the stable to avoid hypothermia. The rest of the year they can run around outside in a group of around thirty goats. father with his long horns is present as well. The best quality mohair comes from the most curly goats. This is mixed with silk for a stronger and lighter yarn. Katja is a member of the cooperation Mohairs de France. With this cooperation several smallholders can wash, dye and spin their wool together. |
